DAMASCUS, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Armed clashes erupted on Sunday between Syrian authorities-affiliated forces and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Tal Maaz village, east of Syria's Aleppo province, state news agency SANA reported.

A Syrian military unit ambushed a group of SDF fighters who attempted to infiltrate military positions in the village, and other SDF fighters based in the village of Um Tina and in the town of Deir Hafer opened fire on those military positions in an attempt to withdraw their ambushed fellows, SANA reported, citing an unnamed official.

The initial clashes involved light weapons, but as shelling continued by the SDF fighters, the military forces then responded with heavy weapons and called in reinforcements, SANA reported.

It was not immediately clear whether the clashes resulted in any casualties.

The flare-up came despite recent coordination efforts between Damascus and Kurdish authorities aimed at presenting a unified stance on national and security issues.

On March 10, the Syrian interim government and the SDF reached a deal on merging all civil and military institutions in the Kurdish-controlled region under state institutions.

On July 25, Syria's foreign affairs authority said it had agreed with the SDF to hold consultations in Paris "as soon as possible" to complete the implementation of the agreement.

However, on Aug. 9, the Syrian interim authority said it would not attend the planned consultations in Paris, accusing the SDF of holding a "separatist" conference a day earlier that undermined ongoing integration efforts.
