BEIJING, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 1.14 percent to 3,843.6 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.25 percent higher at 12,571.37 points.
The combined turnover of these two indices stood at 2.97 trillion yuan (about 417.94 billion U.S. dollars) -- down from 3.17 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.
During Thursday's trading, chip stocks rose sharply, while stocks in the semiconductor and copper foil sectors also led the gains. Stocks related to agriculture, costumes and liquor suffered major losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 3.82 percent to close at 2,827.17 points on Thursday. ■
